Flutter Entertainment plans to close Sky Bet’s Malta operation less than a year after moving its commercial headquarters from the UK to the island. The decision will bring Sky Bet’s operations together with sister brand Sky Gaming in Gibraltar.
Around 50 Malta-based positions are expected to be affected by redundancies, while remaining employees are expected to transfer to Gibraltar. The Maltese branch of the UK entity, SBG Sports Limited, is also expected to be wound down.
The decision forms part of a wider restructuring of Flutter’s UK and Ireland business. Announced on 20 October, the restructuring puts approximately 1,400 jobs at risk as the group seeks to reduce fixed and operating costs following increases in UK gambling taxes.
The move also follows the appointment of Neil Banbury as managing director of Sky Betting & Gaming. Banbury joined Flutter on 1 October after more than 15 years at Kindred Group.
Flutter’s wider presence in Malta will continue, with approximately 500 employees remaining on the island across brands including Betfair International.
