Indian Live Casinos

indian live casinosI had no real knowledge of whether it’s legal to gamble online in India or not. It’s only after my brother in law asked me that I did some research to see what Indian Live Casinos there were.

My wife is a UK born Indian, her parents come from Bangalore in Southern India and we have family spread around that area.

What I do know is that without exception my extended family love card and board games. Whenever we meet up on family occasions there is normally a game of Gin Rummy or Scrabble going on.

Other games regularly played include  Satte Pe Satta, Teen Do Paanch, Bluff/Challenge and Donkey. Whatever is played it’s always highly competitive!

I already new that it was legal to play games of skill like Poker and Gin Rummy online, but didn’t know whether gamblers in India could play at online casinos.

Is it legal to gamble online in India?

I was surprised to find that it’s not that straightforward, especially in a country where playing games is so popular.

It’s a bit of a mess really.

Legislation exists, the Public Gambling Act of 1867 prohibits the running or being in charge of a public gaming house. There is no mention of Online or the Internet.

The 1998 Lotteries Act allows Indian states to operate lotteries, although not all of them do.

The Indian state of Sikkim introduced it’s own gambling regulation in 2008 where it is legal to bet on Sports. More recently online gaming has been included.

So generally online gaming isn’t regulated in India and could be considered illegal. But the lack of regulation means that Indian players can play at foreign online casinos.

However there are two obstacles that make it difficult,

  • Firstly the Federal Information Technology Act of 2011 prohibits publication or transmission of information that can corrupt people and required Indian ISP’s to block access to foreign betting sites.
  •  Secondly the ability to deposit and withdraw can be complicated.

Overcome these two and as a player you’re good to go.

How can I deposit and withdraw money from India?

It will be a case of trial and error I’m afraid.

Visa and Mastercard can be used, but sometimes the transactions get rejected.

If you deposit successfully you’ll be able to withdraw to the same method. I’d do a small test first to make sure it works.

Alternatively you can use one of the online payment wallets like Skrill or Neteller. Just make sure that the online casino you choose accepts them.

Can I deposit and play in Rupees?

Yes. An increasing number of online casinos will accept deposits in Rupees.
