LIVE ULTIMATE TEXAS HOLD’EM

live ultimate texas holdem

The aim of Live Ultimate Texas Hold’em is for the player to beat the dealer by forming the best “5 card poker hand”, from the two cards he’s dealt and 5 community cards.

It’s basically a very simple game. The enjoyment comes from the betting options and the side bets that can be played. You can even win your side bets when your hand loses to the dealer!

Depending on when you choose to make the play bet (which you’re only allowed to do once during the game), it’s possible to make a raising bet of the initial ante bet 1, 2, 3 or 4 times.

Live Ultimate Texas Holdem Summary

This version of Live Ultimate Texas Holdem has been developed specifically for playing at online live casinos and is played with one player hand that an unlimited number of players can play.

In land-based casinos, especially in Las Vegas where I play one a year this is a 7 seat table game and is one of the most enjoyable games on the table floor.

However a word of caution.

With all the side bets it’s very easy to lose your chip stack quite quickly if you’re not hitting any hands. So be prepared to lose.

On the flip side when you hit a hand you can win big, so it works both ways.

Betting Options

To begin the game the player must place an Ante Bet and a Blind bet of equal value.

There’s an optional Trips side bet that has advanced odds on a variety of poker hands from three of a kind and up and is paid regardless of what the dealer gets. It’s very similar to the Pairs Plus side bet in Three Card Poker.

Game Rounds

Initial Deal

Two cards are then dealt with the player face up and two to the dealer’s face down.

First Betting Round

At this point, the player has two choices.

  1. choose to do nothing and wait for the community cards to be dealt on the table before making a playing decision.
  2. He can decide to play and raise the initial Ante bet 3x or 4x. You might want to do this if you’ve been dealt a pair or some other combination that you think will be improved by the flop cards.

Second Deal

The dealer then deals 3 of the 5 community cards (the Flop).

Second Betting Round

If the player hasn’t made a play bet in the previous round he has the option to make a play bet of 2x the ante.

If he chooses not to then he can Check (do nothing) and wait for the next betting round.

Third Deal

The two remaining community cards are dealt.

Third Betting Round

If the players haven’t made a play bet yet he is able to make one now but only at 1x the initial Ante Bet.

If he chooses not to make a play bet then the hand is folded and he loses his initial ante and blind bets.

The Result

Dealers Cards

Once all betting rounds have completed the dealer reveals his two cards and his and the player’s best poker hands are compared to determine the winning hand.

The dealer needs to have a pair or better in his hand to “qualify”.

Significance of Dealer Qualifying

If the Dealer’s hand does NOT qualify:

  • All Ante Bets are returned to the players that have made play bets.
  • If the player’s hand is better than the dealer’s, the player’s Blind and Play bets are paid out according to the pay tables.
  • If the player’s hand is weaker than the dealer’s, the player does not receive a payout for their Blind or Play bet and the best is lost.
  • If the player’s hand is equal to the dealer’s, the player’s Blind and Play bets are declared a “push” and returned to the player.

If the dealer’s hand qualifies:

  • The player’s hand is better than the dealer’s hand, the Blind and Play bets are paid out according to the pay tables.
  • If the player’s hand is less than the dealer’s hand the players lose and the Play, Ante, and Blind bets are lost
  • If the hands are the same then the Ante, Blind and Play bets all push and are returned to the player.

Optional Trips Side Bet

The Trips side bet is paid on the value of the player’s hand if it’s 3 of a kind or better. The dealer’s hand and the outcome of the game round have no bearing on whether this is paid.
